Why does the stock market usually crash in October?
5 of the last 9 crashes, including the biggest decline in the current crisis, the 1929 crash and the 1987 crash all happened in October. Most of the rest happened in September. What is it about this time of year? People must have studied this pattern but I’ve never heard an explanation of it and trader friends don’t seem concerned. With the state of things at the moment, especially the recent rally, shouldn’t we be a bit nervous about what might happen in the next 8 weeks?
Here’s what I think – the reason why there are so many sell offs during the late summer and early autumn is because most of the portfolio managers revaluate their fund’s performance. A lot of the securities that are held have higher price-earnings ratios than in the beginning of the year. Depending on which investment strategy the fund manager is employing, some of these stocks may be trading over their alpha and the PM (portfolio manager) may elect to sell. They may be overweight in that particular security, sector..whatever…and decide there are other opportunities in the market today. It’s just the way the market moves. Most companies do well in the fall and winter months while others struggle during the spring and summer.
